Lemme share the tea for anyone who isn’t aware:

    • Owl house is a show by Dana Terrace that ran on Disney
    • It slowly developed into big pro-LGBTQ themes
    • Disney panicked, cancelled the show, claimed it was unpopular despite excellent ratings
    • Dana Terrace left with a bunch of others to form an independent studio
    • Their first show (Knights of Guinevere) features a floating amusement park that rains garbage all over the workers below, and robots that have orbs on their heads that produce a silhouette strikingly similar to that of Mickey Mouse

I liked that although Knights of Guinevere was clearly ragging on Disney, it felt like it wasn’t just a cathartic trauma dump from Dana Terrace and crew — it was actually being used to say something meaningful. It’s a good sign when the pilot episode of a show has such a strong sense of themes.

I’d heard a lot of hype when the pilot was released, but didn’t get around to watching it until I randomly thought “I wonder what Dana Terrace is up to nowadays? Hopefully she’s working somewhere better than Disney, because surely there must be someone with power out there who recognised how Disney was squandering her potential”. When I saw that it was her and some of the Owl House team who made Knights of Guinevere, that caused me to immediately go watch it. The only disappointment was that we don’t know when new episodes will be available, but hopefully things will be regular once we do start getting episodes.

It absolutely is not. The swearing alone would make it inappropriate for kids, but one of the scenes literally has someone using another person’s intestines as a leash. It’s an excellent pilot, but not for kids like The Owl House was.

Demon Hunter is fairly tame. Maybe the top of the list should be Ninja Scroll or Berserk or Elden Leid or Urotsukidōji.

Elfen Lied? I swear the only thing I remember about that anime was the controversy about its gore and themes.

Oh yeah, a TON of gore and naked bob/vageen. I loved it when I was a teen but haven’t seen it since. I could do with a rewatch!

We only have one episode but so far it’s not exactly young kid appropriate… but it’s not fully adult animation either. The limited gore is slightly disturbing but technically from something comparable to a robot and while it does have some swearing it’s not often.

From my individual perspective as a parent, mine watched it and I’d say around 10 or so, you’d probably be okay. Best practice in my opinion though is always going to be to watch it yourself first and see how you feel.

Is Owl House mainly a kids show? It seems like it.

Same question for Knights of Guinevere? Kids, YA, a bit of both but also interesting for adults?
